Your Tax ID under the 2026 law
From 1 January 2026 the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires every taxable person to register and hold a Tax ID. Sole traders, freelancers, companies and non-profit bodies are all included.
What the Tax ID is for
It identifies your business to the Nigeria Revenue Service and to your State Internal Revenue Service. You need it to pay and file VAT, PAYE, withholding tax and company income tax, to open corporate bank accounts, and to bid for government contracts.
What happens if you do not register
The Act sets an administrative penalty of ₦50,000 in the first month and ₦25,000 for each further month for failing to register (NTAA s.100(1)).
Already registered? Check the rest
Registration is only the first obligation. The compliance health check shows which returns your business should be filing and whether you are on track.
